Negative Cat

An art teacher gave me some black paper and white charcoal, I wanted to see how I could work with negative space. I wanted to emphasize her whiskers because they are so prominent on her face. I wanted to get it right on the first try so I practiced on tracing paper and then transferred the drawing over. I found it odd that my mind automatically created an outline for the cat even though there is no defining lines.
