Laura Schofield
My name is Laura Schofield, I am from American Canyon. I enjoy drawing, walking my dog, playing piano, baking sweets, and learning. I am part of the National Honors Society and I take part in a program called Girls on the Run. I have two cats and dog. I used to live in the country Singapore, in Southeast Asia. I learned about the diverse cultures in this country. I am a scholar athlete, I am on cross country and on two swim teams. I have taken art for four to five years.
I started my first art class in the sixth grade, at that point I could only trace. When I took eighth grade art I started to become more competent with my abilities and tried to freehand. Once I entered high school I suddenly discovered my talent in illustration. I strived to produce the best art in my class. I would draw on my own time. I enjoy drawing animals and continue to improve my technique in drawing humans. I have used all forms of media; pastel, pencil, digital, charcoal,watercolor, acrylic, and pen. I prefer realism to surreal and abstract. I take other artists, styles, and movements and use their drawings and paintings as inspiration for my own.
I continued to improve my technique in drawing humans and the human figure. I have used all forms of media; pastel, pencil, digital, charcoal,watercolor, acrylic, and pen. I normally start by finding pictures to use for references and I take other artists, styles, and movements and use their drawings and paintings as inspiration for my own. Then I do an artist study and find the style that I want to use then chose the media to use. My favorite material is pen and bristol paper because I can get in a lot of detail and designs into the drawing with accuracy. I like looking at the final product the best out of all that I do. I prefer realism to surreal and abstract.
When I say that a piece has turned out really well I mean that it looks complete and could be used by someone else as a proper reference. The more I work the more I notice patterns like how many animals I draw and that there are varieties of textures given to the animals like feathers, fur, scales, or just abstract patterns. Another pattern is that I will either try photo realism or zentangle, there are few pieces that are in between. I will not shade or color in multiple directions because I learned how to blend the shades and colors together to look just as good as coloring in multiple directions while saving materials. A lot of my colored drawings have blue in them, blue is my favorite color, it creates a flow that helps the eye move and observe different aspects of the ice and will blend into other analogous colors like purple. I use blue to help bring other colors out like yellow and orange.
When I work with bristol board with pens I am reminded of my first completed piece that was done in that style. I drew a wolf that was so good it was featured in multiple art shows. It makes me want to strive to produce a piece just as good or even better. I begin a piece by researching an idea and find pictures I will use as a reference to draw. When my artwork is going well I am filled with a sense of excitement at the possibilities for the piece and how I can improve it. I know it’s done when it’s balanced with plainness and detail, dark and light, proper colors put where they should be. When people see my work I would like them to think about the hours I put into my work and the creativity that I put into it.
